AN UNUSUAL LARGE MOTHER-OF-PEARL-INLAID COMPOUND CABINET
MING DYNASTY (1368-1644)
Comprised of the chest inlaid in large sections of mother of pearl on a thick, black lacquer ground with a phoenix in flight amidst peony sprays emerging from ornamental rockwork, atop a separate cabinet with two doors fitted flush around the center stile and inlaid in similar fashion with floral sprays framed by stylized floral scroll on the edges of the frame, the whole raised on short feet

Lot Essay

Very similar inlay, using large sections of mother of pearl on a black lacquer ground, can be seen on a double chest and a coffer, both in the collection of O. Roche, esq., illustrated in Chinese Furniture, London, 1922, pls. VIII and XXII(a), respectively.
