The present stand is a fine example of zitan carving and is distinguished by the precision of the carving executed in high relief, and the luminous quality of the dense zitan wood.
See a related blackwood rectangular tray (3.5 cm. high), also carved from a single section of wood with scrolling clouds, illustrated by P. Mak, The Art of Chinese Wooden Stands: The Songde Tang Collection, Hong Kong, 2008, pp. 246-7, pl. 86, where it is attributed to the Southern style.
