    Lot Essay

Compare the style and colour of the enamelling with the archaistic zun-shaped doucai vase illustrated in Porcelains in Polychrome and Contrasting Colours - The Complete Collection of Treasures of the Palace Museum, Hong Kong, pp. 248-249, pl. 227. Significantly this Imperial vase also bears a Chenghua nianhao rather than a contemporary reign mark. After selecting doucai enamels for the decoration of an ancient bronze shape, the emphasis on archaism sought after is then further endorsed by the Chenghua mark.
