The following group of furniture is from Vladimir Kagan’s first major commission in 1952 for Mr. and Mrs. Samuel L. Stedman in Armonk, New York. The pieces of furniture are amongst the first examples of Kagan’s most iconic designs, many of which are still in production for his Classic Collection.
Kagan and Mrs. Stedman remained close friends for over 60 years until her passing last year. The home remained fully intact and beautifully preserved. Everything was Kagan right down to the living room curtains that are a rare example of the few fabric prints he designed. The textiles on the upholstered pieces—all original—are notable as they are from the earliest period of the partnership with the Swiss textile manufacturer, Hugo Dreyfuss.
Kagan considers “the Stedman furniture to be amongst the most treasured collections ever to go on sale at auction”.
We would like to thank Vladimir Kagan for his assistance in providing information about this commission.
