Nathan Mayer Rothschild (1777-1836), was a German Jewish banker and financier and one of five sons of the second-generation of the Rothschild banking dynasty. He first established a textile jobbing business in Manchester and from there went on to establish N M Rothschild & Sons in London. During the early part of the 19th century, the Rothschild's London bank was able to provide funds to the armies of the Duke of Wellington. He was also known for his role in the abolition of the slave trade through his part-financing of the British government buyout of the plantation industry's slaves. By the time of his death in 1836, he had secured the position of the Rothschilds as the preeminent investment bankers in Britain and Europe.
