A CARVED OVAL AGATE DOUBLE PORTRAIT PROFILE CAMEO OF TWO ROMAN HEADS
LATE 16TH OR EARLY 17TH CENTURY
A man and a woman, facing left in profile; in an oval gold mount applied to a heliotrope ground within an associated elaborate gilt-bronze frame decorated with scrolls, swags and garlands, surmounted by an integrally cast circular wreath framing an oval agate cameo head of Medusa, of the 3rd century AD
Double portraits of rulers, introduced during the Hellenistic period, continued as a theme of Roman gem engraving and were revived during the Italian Renaissance, featuring contemporary as well as ancient royalty. For other examples see I. Weber, Kostbare Steine, Die Gemmensammlung des Kurfürsten Johann Wilhem von der Pfalz (Munich, 1972), nos. 240, 241.
