It is considered that some of the finest nineteenth century jewellery produced in Australia came from the Sydney studio of Julius Hogarth and Conrad Erichsen. At the Sydney Exhibition in 1854 Erichsen was awarded a bronze medal for a similar gold brooch which incorporated a wreath of leaves, an emu, a kangaroo and an Aborigine with a spear. Hogarth and Erichsen became partners in 1854 and established themselves at George Street in Sydney. The partnership lasted until 1861 when the business became bankrupt.
