A BLUE AND WHITE GU-FORM VASE
KANGXI PERIOD (1662-1722)
The bulbous central section is painted with two archaistic taotie masks reserved on a diaper ground, between narrow bands of key-fret, chevron and cloud scroll designs. The flaring upper and lower sections are painted with alternating plantain leaves and blades filled with archaistic motifs.

Lot Essay

A similar beaker vase (47.7 cm. high), also dating to the Kangxi period, decorated with archaistic decorative motifs, including a stylized taotie mask is in the collection of the Palace Museum, Beijing, illustrated in The Complete Collection of Treasures of the Palace Museum - 36 - Blue and White Porcelain with Underglaze Red (III), Hong Kong, 2000, p. 41, no. 34.
