Comprising six Mamluk sgraffito fragments each from the centre of a bowl or dish with short vertical foot, three bearing Mamluk blazons, one with a floral motif, one with interlacing kufic and one with an animal, all on yellow or ochre ground and one blue, black and white fragment also with short vertical foot and decorated with heron on blue scrolling ground, the underside with the signature 'abu al-'izz

Lot Essay

Parallels can be found to all the blazons depicted here, the lion, the fleur-de-lys, the two swords flanking a central panel, and the paired polo sticks and balls (L. A. Mayer, Saracenic Heraldry, Oxford, 1933, pls. I, V, VII and IX).
