A FINE BELGIAN CASED PAIR OF PERCUSSION TARGET PISTOLS BY S. J. BOVY
CIRCA 1845-50
Each with browned twist octagonal sighted barrel cut with micro-groove rifled bore, inscribed 'Canon Damas Turc' in gold letters within a silver frame and inlaid with bands of gold and silver leaves, pellets and lines over the breech, engraved case-hardened breech signed on the underside (the nipples each expertly replaced), engraved case-hardened breech tang and lock, figured 'bird's eye' maple half-stock carved with a shell in low relief at the fore-end, chequered butt with horn oval cap (each cap chipped on one side), engraved case-hardened steel mounts, blued set trigger (one setting screw missing), gold escutcheons inset behind the breech tang and under the barrel bolt, and each retaining nearly all of its original finish: in original brass-bound fitted case veneered in highly figured French crotch walnut, lined in green baize (small areas of shrinkage), the lid with brass escutcheon incorporating a flush-fitting handle, an additional escutcheon engraved with a coat-of-arms and presentation inscription, and retaining most of the original complement of accessories, with key, and evidently little used (the lid portion of the lock missing).
