A PAIR OF REGENCY GILTWOOD, GILT-COMPOSITION AND EBONISED PIER GLASSES

Each with a divided part-bevelled rectangular plate flanked on each side by a pair of reeded columns below a ribbon-tied cornice, with a conforming base, each with paper label on the reverse 'THOMAS FENTHAM NO136, STRAND NEAR SOMERSET HOUSE, Manufacturer of Looking Glasses, that CONVEX and CONCAVE MIRRORS, and all sorts of picture and THE GLASS FRAMES. GLASS FOR EXPORTATION', one inscribed in blue chalk on the reverse 'glass' and in white chalk '5635', the other inscribed in paint 'LH', the upper plate on both possibly re-used, one lacking the centre of the top frieze, the lower plinth and fluted apron probably added at the end of the 19th Century

Lot Essay

Thomas Fentham, carver, gilder, glass grinder and picture-frame maker, occupied several addresses in the Strand between 1774 and 1825. He worked from 136 The Strand between 1794-1820. His label appears on closely related pier glasses illustrated in C. Gilbert, Pictorial Dictionary of Marked London Furniture 1700-1840, Leeds, 1996, pp. 28 and 200-203, figs. 336-343.
