This work is being sold with a letter from Calder to the previous owner and a small related sketch.
This work was gifted to Mrs. Bernadette O'Toole by Alexander Calder in 1959. Mrs. O'Toole or "Billie," as she was more affectionately known, worked as a personal assistant to the famed New York architect Wallace Harrison. Harrison's firm was responsible in whole or in part for the design and execution of some of New York's greatest monuments including Rockefeller Center, the United Nations building and the Trylon and Perisphere for the World's Fair of 1939.
The numerous collaborations between Harrison and Calder enabled O'Toole to become well acquainted with the artist. This gift exemplifies Calder's admiration for Mrs. O'Toole, who worked for Wallace Harrison until his death in 1981.
