The first with heavy 32 in. (81.5 cm.) octagonal barrel, engraved lock, maple half-stock, and white metal mounts including a plate on the underside of the fore-end engraved with apparently spurious dedication 'PRESENTED TO KIT CARSON / BY HIS / FRIENDS IN LES VAGAS N.M. / JULY 14TH 1852', iron parts and mounts with varnished or lacquered protective coating; the second with heavy smooth-bored 44 ½ in. (113 cm.) signed octagonal barrel, flat bevelled lock, walnut full stock, and brass mounts including hinged patchbox-cover
