I am grateful for the opportunity offered to me by Christie's of putting up for auction my private collection of jewelry, the proceeds of which will be partly intended for the creation of a space at Pantelleria, dedicated to children affected by thalassemia, a disease which, as is known, particularly affects the natives of the Mediterranean countries, forcing them to have repeated transfusions of blood which will, nonetheless, give them only a short life. The first occasion that I came across this sad condition was at the time of my first pregnancy. In the desperate attempt to collect blood able to stop a hemorhage I was found to be the healthy carrier of thalassemia and only the absence of this disease in the blood of my husband allowed me to carry my pregnancy to full term. But the danger I escaped did not make me forget the universal awareness of the sadness and anxiety affecting the lives of those who suffer from this disease. On the contrary, the pain and uncertainty of survival was tragically conveyed to me by a small thalassemic girl who was aware that she was not going to be able to fulfill the dream which was the center of her life, dancing. It was for the joy of giving to such people a period of happiness within the space of a short but intensive life that I decided to bring together all such children in a magic island, Pantelleria, where the light of the stars at night is as bright as that of the sun, just as the light of hope and of love shall never be able to leave their small but great souls. From my heart I would like to thank all those people who are making a contribution towards the concrete implementation of this, my dream, in order that a smile may be given to every child.
