Nadezhda Alekseevna Peshkova, née Vvedenskaia, was the daughter of a Moscow professor of medicine and friend of the daughter of the great base singer Fedor Chaliapin. She married Maksim Alekseevich Peshkov, the son of the writer Maxim Gorki, by whom she had two daughters, Marfa and Daria.
This portrait was possibly painted at Posillipo, near Naples, where the writer was living on account of ill-health, with his family and an extended, ever changing, entourage. Grigor'ev went to Italy in 1926 to paint the writer himself, which took about two months. See Serge-Aljosja Stommels, Boris Dmitrevich Grigoriev; a Biography, (Nijmegen, 1993), pp.71-72.
