Lot Essay

The present lot depicts one of the piers for Brunel's suspension bridge that was constructed over the Thames in Charing Cross, in 1845. The bridge was there for 15 years, and then dismantled, becoming a railway bridge. The chains for the suspension were taken to Bristol, and used for the iconic Clifton Suspension Bridge.
