Lot Essay

Wood’s large bronze, commissioned to mark the sesquicentennial of Wolfe’s death in 1759 and paid for by public subscription was unveiled in 1911 and stands on the village green in Wolfe’s birthplace, Westerham, Kent. Wolfe is portrayed ‘with his sword uplifted and in the act of moving forward, just before he received the bullet from which he died in the moment of victory on the Heights of Abraham.’ (The Times reporting on the unveiling)
