John Gaines was a breeder and owner of thoroughbred horses from Lexington, Kentucky, and an avid and discerning collector of fine old-master prints in the 1960s. In the 1970s his interest expanded to include ukiyo-e; that collection was sold at Sotheby Park Bernet in May 1979.
