[HORN BOOK]. Silver hornbook with printed paper text mounted on wood containing the alphabet, vowels, and The Lord's Prayer. England, 17th century.
82 x 58 mm. Black letter (the last two lines slightly defective); mounted on wood and covered in mica (a few chips), with a silver back and handle, elaborately engraved on verso with a stylized bird and foliage and a scalloped edge turn-in holding mica cover, handle pierced with a heart-shape, maker's mark "W.P." Provenance: Mrs. Sophia Harford Adlam of Chew Magna, Somerset (see Tuer, pp. 103-04); purchased from Emil Offenbacher, 3 June 1955.
