Lot Essay

I Want To Live! tells the story of Barbara Graham, executed for the murder of an elderly woman in 1955. Although admitting her presence at the murder scene, Graham claimed she had been framed by her accomplices. The film, starring Susan Hayward, who won an Academy Award for her portrayal of Graham, highlights the significant doubts over the safety of her conviction. The advance poster for the film showed the final execution scene and suggested it was a picture of Graham herself. It proved too controversial for the censors and was banned. It was replaced by a less offensive, and less exploitative, poster.
