Lot Essay

The present lot was commissioned by the father of the sitter in 1839, according to the artist's notebook (see Ir J.G. Kram, Jan Adam Kruseman Jzn. en zijn catalogus van portretten, in Jaarboek Amstelodamum, LII, 1960, p. 168, no. B.17). The sitter's father, Mr J.C. Rijk, was Govenor General of the Dutch West Indies at the time. He had the portrait - for which he paid the artist 300 guilders - shipped to the West Indies in the same year.

We are grateful to Mrs Drs R.E. van Ditzhuyzen and Mrs Drs E.L. Lipke-Deetman from Museum Paleis het Loo, Apeldoorn, for their help in cataloguing this lot. The painting will be included in their forthcoming monograph on the artist's work, which will be published in conjunction with the forthcoming exhibition on J.A. Kruseman held at Paleis het Loo from 24 October 2002-26 January 2003.
