Parts I-II (all published) in one volume, 2o (280 x 175mm). Woodcut device on titles, large woodcut arms of the Earl of Essex on the verso of the title to the second part. (First title soiled, holed and repaired with a few characters supplied in manuscript facsimile, occasional small repairs to blank margins.) Old sheep, covers with triple fillet border in blind (rebacked, inner hinges repaired, extremities rubbed).
THE FIRST BIBLIOGRAPHICAL CATALOGUE OF BOOKS PUBLISHED IN ENGLISH AND VERY RARE AT AUCTION - the last copy listed as having sold at auction was in 1976. Maunsell turned from his original profession of draper to publish the present work. His intention was that it should appear in three parts, but only two were published. The first part includes works 'which concerneth such matters of Divinitie, as have bin either written in our owne Tongue, or translated out of anie other language'; the second part 'concerneth the Sciences Mathematicall, as Arithmetick, Geometrie, Astronomie, Astrologie, Musick, the Arte of Warre, and Navigation: And also, of Physick and Surgerie.' Maunsell died before he could publish the concluding part, but mentions his intention in his dedication to the Company of Stationers (in the second part):'Now it resteth, that I should proceede to the thirde and last part, which is of Humanity, wherin I shall have occasion to shew, what wee have in our owne tongue, of Gramer, Logick, Rethoricke, Lawe, Historie, Poetrie, Policie, &c'.
