A collection of photographs and printed ephemera relating to the West Indies and the Foreign Sugar Bounties, circa 1896-97. Two albums containing a total of approx. eighty-five photographs, albumen and gelatin silver prints, sizes from 3¾ x 5¾ in. to 9½ x 11 in., approx. seven signed Siza with occasional titles and numbers in the negatives, several with photographer's ink credit stamp on verso L.F. Sellier (4), W.C. Cooper (6), Leon Sully (8), loosely inserted in pre-cut slits, the majority titled in ink on mounts, half morocco, titled and dated Through the West Indies 1896-97 and ruled in gilt on front covers, large 4to.; an album containing 24 cartes-de-visite and twenty cabinet card portraits of members of the Beeton and Price Jones' families; with several copies of The Truth about the Foreign sugar Bounties, London, 1898; journals, newletters; manuscript notebooks recording observations in the West Indies; and a scrapbook containing a quantity of newspaper articles from 'The Daily Mail' and printed leaflets by Mayson Beeton, variously mounted, titled Through the West Indies for the 'Daily Mail' 1896-97 in ink on a paper label mounted to front cover, large 4to., half calf.(a lot)

Lot Essay

The albums include views around Bermuda, Antigua, Martinique, Barbados, Trinidad, Caracus and British Guiana comprising street scenes, harbour views and landscapes as well as several portrait studies of natives, village scenes, a group portrait of 'Indians of B. Guiana in their war paint', images of workers in the cane fields and sugar factories. Mayson M. Beeton, son of the famous culinary author Mrs. Beeton, was Secretary of the Anti-Bounty League and Late Special Commissioner for 'The Daily Mail' in the West Indies. He wrote extensively on the problems which arose in Britain and the colonies as a result of the implementation of foreign sugar bounties, and was a leading figure in the fight for their abolition.
