Lot Essay

In 1915 Kisling returned to Montparnasse following his discharge through injury from the French army, for which he was to receive French citizenship. Later the same year he met Renée Gros, the daughter of a field officer, whom he soon married. The present work and the next lot are Kisling's searching portraits of his new wife and her sister, possibly executed in Saint-Tropez during his long sojourn there in the summer of 1918.
