NANSEN, Fridtjof (1861-1930). Fram over polhavet: den Norsk Polarfaerd 1893-1896. Kristiania: H. Aschehoug & Co, 1897.
The first edition of Nansen’s epic journey Farthest North—a rare set in original parts. Nansen, against accepted opinion, deliberately froze his ship—designed by him for this purpose—into the pack ice and allowed it to drift North across the Arctic, inspired by the wreck of the USS Jeanette. In March of 1895, he set out from the trapped ship on a dog sled and reached the highest latitude yet attained by man: 86°14' N. The expedition returned to enormous worldwide acclaim, and Nansen settled into a career as professor of oceanography, active member of the Norwegian independence movement, and major patron of refugees—for which he was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1922.
