Lot Essay

The fine colouring of the maps is strangely enhanced by the browning resulting from the chemical reaction of some of the pigments with the woven paper on which the maps are printed.
This edition calls for only 18 maps. The 19th map (of Trinidad) is listed in manuscript at the end of the printed index and reappears in the 1807 edition of Jefferys' "West-India atlas"(Phillips 3947), number 63.
