FIRST AMERICAN EDITION, PRESENTATION COPY, inscribed by O'Flaherty on the front free endpaper: "To Louis Sherman, With best wishes for everything you didn't have the chanticleer to do in your past life. Liam O'Flaherty." John Ford won an Academy Award as Best Director for the 1935 film adaptation, which also won another three Academy Awards, and was nominated for others, including Best Picture.
