Lot Essay

With Patek Philippe Extract from the Archives confirming production of the present watch in 1957 and its subsequent sale on 16 November 1958.

This platinum "Manta Ray" is one of the rarest rectangular wristwatches of Patek Philippe's post-war production and also to be considered as one of the most avant-garde designs. Reference 2554 is one of the most exclusive models, examples in platinum come hardly ever to the market. In fact, in-depth research results in the discovery of barely a handful of platinum references 2554.

This example here, only once before offered at public auction, is a particularly crisp and well preserved specimen. The case is sharp and the cream-coloured dial is beautifully harmonizing with the icy tone of the platinum case.

Few 1950s designs radiate so much flamboyance and elegance and even fewer examples preserved in such good condition can offer so much quality to a discerning collector as the present "Manta Ray".
