Lot Essay

Over the three weeks that Gauguin spent with Pissarro at Osny in the summer of 1883 - he arrived on 15 June, according to Pissarro's letter to his son, Lucien, 'to spend the holidays and do some studies' - Gauguin painted seven canvases, including La ferme de la Groue à Osny. Two works from this series are today housed in the Ny Carlsberg Glypotek in Copenhagen (W. 102 & 105), with other pictures in the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston (W.106) and the Rhode Island School of Design at Providence (W. 101).

Having visited the older artist repeatedly since 1879, the summer of 1883 was to be longest and the final time that Gauguin spent painting with Pissarro. Such concentrated exposure led Gauguin to go so far as to paint the same motifs as had been tackled by Pissarro and there is an extant Pissarro also showing La ferme de la Groue (P&V. 583), although viewed from a slightly broader angle.
