Lot Essay

Educated in Vienna under Otto Wagner, Schindler emigrated to the United States in 1914, and between 1918 and 1921 worked for the office of Frank Lloyd Wright. Establishing his own office in 1921, a noted early Los Angeles building was the Schindler and Clyde Chase duplex of 1922, which was the joint home of the Schindler and Richard Neutra families until 1931. Schindler and Neutra often worked in collaboration, fulfilling joint commissions in differing but complimentary styles. Schindler's buildings, and the furnishings designed to support the interiors, are characterised by a a bold and graphic superimposition of architectural planes.
