Diagonal Series

This painting is very similar to a well known work by Tyeb Mehta titled And Behind Me Desolation painted in the same year. The body of a woman, mutilated by a bright diagonal, constitutes the central image. The body, though dismembered, does not appear to be disjointed. It seems solid, almost sculptural. In both instances the potency of the image is achieved with the greatest economy of means.
