Manuscript title-page. 63 original watercolor drawings of Mammals, the figures by Jean Charles Werner, the backgrounds by Alexandre de Bar, nearly all signed in pencil by both, and many with manuscript pencil identifications of the subjects. Early 20th-century red quarter morocco. Provenance: Bibliotèque Grandidier (bookplate).

A VERY FINE SERIES OF WATERCOLORS, to illustrate Jean Charles Werner's Collection iconographique des animaux utiles et d'agrément, mammifères, oiseaux, poissons, insectes, pouvant servir d'atlas au Bulletin de la Société imp. D'Acclimatation et à l'ouvrage de Isidore Geoffrey St Hilaire sur l'acclimitation des animaux (Paris: By the Author, 1856). Werner was also the author of an atlas of European birds, and was appointed painter to the Museum of Natural History at the Jardin des Plantes in recognition of his skill in the delineation of birds and animals.
