He has been known amongst an elite international art audience since 1957, when he developed his signature colour mezzotint techniqute and founded the Japanese Association of Copper Print Artists with Sekino Jun'ichiro and Hamada Tomoaki. He won prizes for his graphics both in Tokyo and in the Sao Paulo biennale of that year and continued to win prizes both within Japan and internationally in the decades that followed, including the International Biennales in Tokyo, Venice, Lugano, Ljubljana and Krakow. The technique of mezzotint printing was devised more than 300 years ago and is considered the most physically demanding of all the printing processes. A messotint reverses all other printing techniques in that the artist works from dark to light; the shapes and highlights emerge from the black surface of the plate gradually, providing tonal variation that are not possible in any other method of engraving.
