    Lot Essay

We would like to thank Monsieur Marc Stammegna for authenticating the present work.
Monticelli counts among his admirers Oscar Wilde and Vincent Van Gogh, who praised the freedom of his brushstrokes and scintillating bright palette. Monticelli also painted side by side with Cezanne, and his influence can be seen in Cezanne's works of the 1860s. Monticelli's style is highly individual and although he was never greatly successful during his own life time, his reputation blossomed after his death, mirroring comparissons with Van Gogh. Monticelli was a student of Delaroche at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts and his oeuvres include numerous courtly subjects inspired by Watteau, still lives, portraits and Orientalist subjects in the tradition of Delacroix.
