The Studio of Anne E. Christopherson (b. 1921)
Anne Christopherson's paintings transform the seemingly mundane subjects of cranes, docks, chimneys and even paving stones into magical compositions. Descending from a distinguished family of artists such as her grandfather Henry T. Wells, R.A. (1828-1903) and grandmother Joanna Mary Wells (1831-1861), who in a notably patriarchal society had succeeded in exhibiting at the Royal Academy before her 30th birthday, had ensured that painting was in Anne's blood. She studied at Bournemouth College of Art from 1946-48, and Goldsmiths College from 1948-50, where her teachers included Leslie Ward and Kenneth Martin. In the 1960s her work was predominantly abstract, often executed in vibrant colours and deriving from organic forms. By the end of the decade her paintings became figurative as she strived to capture the changing face of London. The subject matter of her paintings was taken largely from Hampstead and Greenwich where she lived with her husband and fellow artist John Christopherson. Both were members of the Greenwich Artists Open Studios, a loose clique of artists living in Greenwich from the 60s to 80s. With a diverse career spanning five decades there is something for everyone.
