Lot Essay

In 1593/4, de Caullery was recorded under the name of 'Loys Solleri' as a pupil of J. de Momper in the Antwerp guild of St. Luke. He is thought to have remained in Antwerp for the rest of his career, although it is not known if he travelled to Italy. De Caullery's allegories on the subject of love, such as the present work, are often compared to the work of Frans Francken I (Antwerp 1542-1616).
