In the autumn of 1939, Lei held a popular literati gathering while residing in Haojiang with his student Yu Kuangfu and his son Deng Ziyu. This was attended by artists Li Yanshan, Shen Zhongqiang, and Zhang Xiangning, among others.
Executed in 1954 during Leis visit to Hong Kong, the present lot was painted by the artist as a token of friendship. This painting is marked by its unique subject matter and its refined brushstrokes.
