The 27 June 1950 edition of Country Life includes an interesting discussion on interior painted panels in Somerset during the 18th century. The present panel bears a striking resemblance, though is not identical to, a painting in the Parlour at Burnt House in Edington, Somerset, the property of Major R.C.F. Luttrell by the local artist Marmaduke Craddock (1660-1717). The present example displays several more hounds at full cry and is still in the original interior bolection panelling.
Though the artist is unknown, the Italianate nature of the landscape setting might suggest the work of an itinerant artist. Similar panels are at Manor Farm, Charlton Mackrell and Midelney Manor, both in the county of Somerset.
