THE PIAZZA SAN MARCO WITH THE BASILICA AND THE CAMPANILE, OIL ON PANEL, BY FRANCESCO GUARDI
Francesco Guardi was born and lived his whole life in Venice. The city was one of his favorite subjects. Following the example of his master Canaletto, he liked to depict the Piazza San Marco as seen from different angles and under different atmospheric conditions.
In this vedute, one of the rare views of the Piazza San Marco that Guardi painted on panel, the artist livens the monuments with many details, sheets hanging on the windows and several stalls of itinerant merchants. This point of view was particularly appreciated by the artist who used it in about twenty pictures including the ones in the National Gallery in London and in Bergamo (A. Morassi, op.cit., cat. 323 and 324) as well as in a drawing in the Cleveland Museum of Art (A.Morassi, Guardi I designi, Venise, 1975, cat.320). These three works share some details with the present painting such as the elegant trio in the foreground or the man holding a child by the hand and the two dogs.
