GIOVANNI GIACOMETTI (1868-1933)

Giovanni Giacomettis Nussbaum ist 1908 entstanden. Der Künstler hält in diesem Familienportrait von links nach rechts seine Frau Annetta und ihre Cousine Augustina Baldini von Borgonovo, beide strickend, deren Tochter mit dem jüngsten Sohn Bruno in den Armen und ganz rechts seine zwei Söhne Alberto und Diego fest. Der Baum im Nachbarsgarten der Familie Giacometti in Stampa, der auch im Gemälde Mutter und Kind (Los 119) am rechten Bildrand angedeutet ist, nimmt hier über die Hälfte des Bildes ein.

Im gleichen Jahr, wie unser Werk Der Nussbaum entstanden ist, wurden im Kunsthaus Zürich rund vierzig Werke Vincent van Goghs neben Arbeiten von u.a. Cuno Amiet und Giovanni Giacometti gezeigt. Der Kunstkritiker Hans Trog berichtete zu dieser Ausstellung im Kunsthaus in der Neuen Zürcher Zeitung folgendes: "Nach van Gogh kann man sich sehr wohl und mit Genuss bei Amiet und Giacometti aufhalten. In der begeisterten Freude an festlichem Farbenglanz sind sie van Goghs künstlerische Glaubensgenossen. [...] Sie sind unsere Erzieher zu van Gogh geworden" (Hans Trog, NZZ, 19.07.1908). Der Nussbaum ist ein wertvolles Zeugnis von Giacomettis einschneidender Begegnung mit dem Werk van Goghs. Davon zeugen nicht nur die expressive Intensität und die flächige Komposition des Gemäldes sondern auch der pastose Pinselduktus.

Giovanni Giacometi's Nussbaum was painted in 1908. The artist presents in this family portrait, from left to right, his wife, Annetta, her cousin, Augustina Baldini from Borgonovo, both knitting, Augustina's daughter with his youngest son Bruno in her arms and on the far right, his two sons, Alberto and Diego. The tree in the garden of Giacomett's neighbour in Stampa, which is also depicted along the right border of the painting, Mutter und Kind (lot 119), here fills over half of the picture.

The same year our work, Der Nussbaum, was painted, the Kunsthaus Zurich showed approximately forty works of Vincent van Gogh beside works of Cuno Amiet, Giovanni Giacometti and others. The art critic Hans Trog reported the following in the Neue Zürcher Zeitung about this exhibition in the Kunsthaus: "After van Gogh one can linger most likely and with pleasure by Amiet and Giacometti. In the enthusiastic joy in festive glossy colours they are van Gogh's artistically faithful comrades. [...] They have become our educators to van Gogh." (Hans Trog, NZZ, 19.07.1908). Der Nussbaum is a valuable testimony to Giacometti's significant encounter with the work of van Gogh. One can witness not only the expressive intensity and the two-dimensional composition of the painting but also the pastose brushstrokes.
