The signature format is consistent with other signed works by Jan Brueghel from the 1640s. This would suggest the present lot dates to this period of Bueghel's career.

The attribution has been confirmed by Fred Meijer of the RKD, The Hague, on the basis of photographs in private correspondence with the present owner.
