Born and raised in Korea, Jang received his MFA from Columbia University in 2006. His work was exhibited at the Affordable Art Fair, Chelsea Pier, New York; Heidi Cho Gallery, New York, in 2006; and at Gana Art, New York, in 2009.
The Collusion series, begun in 2007, explores the artist's response to various landscapes. The initial photographs were taken in the Korean countryside, followed by images shot in Japan and, finally, by images in New York, where the artist is based. Throughout the series, Jang Taewon shot exclusively after midnight, using only moonlight for illumination, giving the work a mysterious and expressive quality. "In the dark night in the countryside," he writes, "I think, 'Where am I standing now?' Suddenly, the sky, mountain and earth around me seem so beautiful. I want to embrace and live together with people, nature, creations and even waste."
