Born in Singapore in 1947, Lee Hock Moh has established both local and international reputation for his vibrant yet delicate orchid paintings in Gongbi (fine line) style with Chinese traditional ink paint. For his artistic contributions, Lee was awarded the Cultural Medallion for Visual Arts in 1981. Integrating techniques from both Chinese traditional ink painting and Western oil painting, Lee developed his own unique style to capture the beauty and the melody of nature.
Nature’s Melody; Everlasting Bliss; Flora and Fauna; Peace and Harmony created in 2015, best exemplifies how Lee blurs the boundary between the West and the East. Four vivid colors of ink paints on a paper, the combination of the atypical colors in Chinese ink painting and the unconventional medium in Western art, represents Lee’s perfect freedom on his canvas, not restricted by genre or culture. Lee’s signature fine brushstrokes and meticulous details successfully invite the viewer into the lyrical yet peaceful scene of flora and fauna, the nature’s melody, as the title indicates.
