Robert Baker trained at the Royal College of Art and worked as a painter, sculptor and potter. The present lot is part of a series of murals he created for Coleg Harlech. Other examples of his mural work can be seen in the village hall in Wood Green, Hampshire. Baker was director of the art college in Stoke-on-Trent and was Professor of Ceramics at the Royal College of Art in 1948-59. Coleg Harlech was founded in 1927 as Wales' only mature students college, in partnership with the Workers' Educational Association. The college is still based in its original home at Wern Fawr, the house was built in 1907 by noted photographer George Davison.
