The artist’s Die Rote Landschaft (The Red Landscape) (Lot 632), completed seven years earlier than Horizon and the Fishing Boats, conveys a sense of motion, and an expressionist’s interpretation of a landscape. From a rare body of works completed by Srihadi while he was overseas, the present lot bears a German title and would doubtlessly have been included as one of the works in the exhibitions that Srihadi held in Germany during the late 1970s.
In Die Rote Landschaft (The Red Landscape), colour is not used in a naturalistic context. To Srihadi, colour could exist independently of any other realities. As an essentially expressionistic painter, his choices of colours are a reflection of the momentary feelings he had at the moment of painting a scene. The tones of white, gold, ochre, yellow and red were doubtlessly chosen by the artist to reflect the mood generated by his sensory experience of the landscape, and becomes a means of establishing intervals in time and space.
The red field in fact comprises of various shades of red, mixed and overlaid one onto another to create a harmonious and rich chromatic field. Dabs of impasto break up the regularity of the red field, visually stimulating the viewer to different parts of the canvas. A couple of bands of ochre and gold colours are decisively underline a row of autumn trees depicted in squat dabs of gold.
