A native of Haimen, Jiansu province, Wang Geyi (1897-1988) was a guohua painter, a calligrapher and a seal engraver. In 1920, he studied under Wu Changshuo in Shanghai. In 1921, he visited Japan with the art delegation led by Wang Zhen. In 1928 returned to Japan with Zhang Daqian. During his lifetime he was a professor at Xinhua AFA (Shanghai), at Zhonghua University, and at the Shanghai College of Art. He was also the Head of Chinese Paintings at Chongqing Art College in 1930, a founding member of the Shanghai Chinese Painting Academy, and the vice-president of Xiling Seal-Carving Society.
