Post Lot Text
The Valley of Jehoshaphat or Josaphat -- 'The valley where God will judge'-- near Jerusalem is the site of several important ancient Jewish tombs including the Tomb of Absalom, shown close-up in the previous lot and to the left in this image. Girault de Prangey made a number of daguerreotypes of the site, each different, constituting an important record of this historic location. In other images, Girault de Prangey shows the harsh rocky landscape with its gaping caverns. In the previous lot he concentrates on the unique structure with its conical roof. Here, Girault de Prangey presents a sweeping view that shows the rugged landscape, and emphasises the large scale of the tomb.
