A FINE COLLECTION OF PRINTS BY ADRIAEN VAN OSTADE (1610-1685)
Compiled by the Late Mr. Jiles Boon (1916-2009) this fine group comprises thirty-nine of the fifty known etchings by Adriaen van Ostade, including many early and rare states.
Ostade's depictions of rural genre scenes, produced between 1647-79, evoke a bucolic view of life in Holland's Golden Age. His tender tableaux of peasant families, travelling musicians, tradesmen, tramps and country fairs are characterized by a great warmth of feeling and a shared sense of humanity with his humble subjects and have made him one of the most loved of the Dutch masters.
Jiles Boon was a passionate and discerning collector of Dutch Fine and Decorative Arts. The majority of his extensive collection, including an important group of Netherlandish bronze mortars, was offered at Christie's Amsterdam in September and November 2010.
In addition to the etchings by Ostade, the sale includes many other fine prints by Dutch artists from the 16th and 17th centuries.
An important album of early Netherlandish landscape prints, attributed to the van Doetecum brothers, after the Master of the Small Landscapes (lot 6), as well as a wonderful group of etchings by Rembrandt (see lots 83-87, 93 and 94) will be offered in the Old Master Print sale at King Street on 7 July 2011 at 2.00 pm.
Finally, Jiles Boon's fine collection of etchings and lithographs by J.A.M. Whistler will feature in the next auction of Old Master, Modern and Contemporary Prints at King Street on 21 September 2011.
