Post Lot Text
Josef Capek was a renowned artist and author who, along with his brother Karel Capek shaped the landscape of Twentieth Century Czechoslovakian literature. The title of this wood engraving, Der Säufer, meaning drunkard in German, is likely to have been created for the artist’s first publication in 1917, a short story entitled Opilec (drunkard in Czech) contained within the book Lelio. The same book uses the word automat, a precursor to the use and invention of the word robot for which the brothers are credited.
