This scratching dog is based on a detailed print by the Master of the Hausbuch active in the Middle Rhine at the end of the fifteenth century. Another example of the model was previously attributed by Wixom to the Vischer workshop and dated to around 1530 (Wixom, loc. cit., no. 180). Examples of this type, many with a similar striated treatment to the fur, are in numerous public collections including the Kunsthistorisches Museum in Vienna. Krahn reattributed this group to Georg Schweiger, who was working during the Durer revival of the 1630s (Krahn, op. cit., no. 204). Another variant of the model was sold at Sotheby's, London, 14 December 2001, lot 61.
